Senior Staff AI Scientist at Tesla

A Senior Staff AI Scientist at Tesla and WVU Alum, Gavin Hall spoke with club members about his experience creating an impacting energy optimizing neural network for the Fremont Tesla Gigafactory. His work was so successful that his algorithm is used at every Tesla Gigafactory in the world.

Gavin Hall graduated from West Virginia University in 2009 in a B.S. Mathematics, B.S. Physics, and B.S. Mechanical Engineering. He then went on to pursue his Masters in Mechanical Engineering at the Massachusetts Institute for Technology before landing a job as a Senior AI Scientist at Tesla. He previously worked as an Electronics Systems and Controls Intern, Space Data Science Intern, and Missile Defense Engineer at NASA, NASA, and John's Hopkins APL respectively. 

In October 2022, Hall spoke with members of Artificial Intelligence WVU about his work at Tesla. He described what Artificial Intelligence, Machine Learning, and Deep Learning are as well as their applications. He then shared an inspiring story about his efforts to optimize the power consumption of the Tesla Gigafactory in Fremont, California by creating a neural network to intelligently cool machines at optimal times to reduce energy costs. 

After the meeting, he and Dr. Devine met at Mario's Fishbowl and shared a drink.
